Supporting of Dialysis Care in Dominica
DSAA Dialysis

Overview:

The Dialysis Unit at the Dominica China-Friendship Hospital received a significant boost with the generous donation of two new Fresenius 2008T BlueStar dialysis machines and six “WINCO Care Cliner (6530)” dialysis chairs equipped with Trendelenburg position and folding tray. This invaluable contribution, valued at over US$50,000.00, was made possible through a partnership between The Maria Holder Memorial Trust, a charitable organization based in Barbados, and the Dominica SiFoCol Alumni Association (DSAA).

Background:

Inspired by a friend and colleague’s battle with renal failure and reliance on dialysis, members of the graduating Class of 1983 initiated a Fundraising Campaign for the advancement of Dialysis care in Dominica. This campaign focused on improving dialysis care accessibility, especially for rural communities. Major support came from The Maria Holder Memorial Trust, alongside other donors affiliated with the Association’s membership.

Commitment to Addressing Chronic Kidney Disease:

Through thorough research into chronic kidney disease in Dominica, the Caribbean, and the United States, the DSAA recognized the escalating prevalence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Committed to being part of the solution, the Association pledged to support and sustain dialysis care, raising awareness to enhance treatment compliance, quality of life, and overall life expectancy for individuals with kidney disease in Dominica.

Impact and Recognition:

Dr. Jennifer Liburd, DSAA’s 1st Vice President and Chair of the Dialysis Committee, led the Association’s efforts in supporting and sustaining dialysis care. The donated dialysis machines were swiftly installed and made available for immediate use, while the dialysis chairs are awaiting delivery. Dr. Liburd emphasized that this donation signifies the Association’s dedication to enhancing dialysis care in Dominica. Ms. Ruchelle Roach, Chief Executive Officer of The Maria Holder Memorial Trust, expressed gratitude to all involved in making the donation possible, highlighting the importance of supporting dialysis care to improve the health and well-being of Dominicans.

Continued Collaboration and Gratitude:

The DSAA reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Wellness & Social Services, the Dominica Hospital Authority, and other stakeholders to extend support and contribute to patient care in rural communities. As a collective of Dominicans, both at home and abroad, the DSAA extends heartfelt appreciation to The Maria Holder Memorial Trust and all donors, many of whom are DSAA members and their networks, for their generosity and continued investment in the lives and well-being of all Dominicans.

This project epitomizes the DSAA’s dedication to making tangible, positive contributions to healthcare accessibility and quality in Dominica, underscoring its commitment to service and community welfare
